Limmern Pumped-Storage Power Station – Hike and Guided Tour
7 November 2026 · Linthal / Tierfehd, Glarus
Wanna hike and go on a tour? Join us for a scenic hike followed by a guided visit to the Limmern Pumped-Storage Power Station, one of Switzerland's most impressive engineering achievements.
During the tour, we'll explore the underground power station and learn how the facility stores energy by pumping water from Lake Limmern to Lake Mutt, located 630 metres higher. This innovative pumped-storage system enables electricity to be generated on demand, helping to balance the power grid and support the integration of renewable energy sources.
Tours begin and end in Tierfehd.
🥾 Hike: Moderate difficulty
👥 Minimum group: 6 people
💰 Cost: CHF 50 per person (tour fee paid to Axpo, return gondola tickets and snacks included)
A guided visit to Kernkraftwerk Gösgen (KKG), one of Switzerland's most efficient pressurised water reactors with over 45 years of operation. From a single reactor, Gösgen produces around 8 billion kWh a year, roughly 15% of Switzerland's electricity. Its steaming cooling tower is one of the best-known landmarks on the Swiss Plateau, and few people ever get to see a plant of this scale from the inside. An unmissable opportunity for anyone interested in nuclear energy, Swiss energy infrastructure and the future of low-carbon power.
An exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to Switzerland's oldest nuclear power station (KKB) and the adjacent Zwillag low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste facility, hosted by Axpo. Our group toured the control room mock-up, turbine hall and waste conditioning plant — a rare look at Switzerland's nuclear energy infrastructure.
